Dr McDonald has deep and highly regarded skills in empirical legal research and extensive networks, particularly in legal assistance and government.

As Research Director, he will lead the research team as we look further at legal capability in Victoria, while contributing to national and international thinking on access to justice.

Dr McDonald’s record in civil legal research is outstanding and lengthy, having spent many years with the Law and Justice Foundation of NSW including working on the seminal Legal Australia-Wide (LAW) Survey.

Since joining VLF in 2019, Dr McDonald has led the Data Mapping and the Community Legal Centre Workforce projects, as well as working closely with Professor Balmer on the Public Understanding of Law Survey.

VLF Executive Director, Lynne Haultain says that after a competitive recruitment process, she is “looking forward to working with Hugh on the next phase of research at the VLF.”

“Hugh is exceptionally qualified to ensure we deliver robust and useful research to inform decision makers and service providers and improve access to justice.”
